Neighbors for a Better San Francisco - Changing SF Politics

Described as an 800-pound gorilla in a Mission Local article, Neighbors for a Better San Francisco was launched in 2020 by lobbyists Mary Jung and Jay Cheng, two San Francisco Association of Realtors. Neighbors for a Better San Francisco launched to influence local politics.

Today, the grassroots, non-profit group has expanded considerably, including receiving backing from major players in San Francisco politics. Its agenda has also grown to include supporting law-and-order initiatives and tough-on-crime policies.

Its major accomplishments have been to recall three school board members believed to have bankrupted the school district, reversing criminal justice reforms, and opposing alternatives to incarceration. It has also campaigned in support of the police department. Other measures it achieved were related to addressing public safety, homelessness, and downtown revitalization. It also helped the centrist majority school board members push through policies that reformed the school system and the city budget.

The group has emerged from the margins to become influential in San Francisco politics, its right, with major news outlets featuring articles on it. Since its launch five years ago, it has been featured in the San Francisco Chronicle, CBS News, NBC Bay Area, The Wall Street Journal, Mission Local, and NPR.
